2026

A large pond, reflecting the surrounding trees and the blue sky overhead

It's been a slow, but mostly positive start to the year. I took some time away from the day job and read a stack of books, worked on some craft projects, and spent time in the sun. Caught up with friends. Went up to the forest and the duck-pond (above), hung out at cafes and in the botanic gardens.

I'm now trying to get myself into a rhythm with writing. Usually I start something new with the new year, and love having the words just flowing. That wasn't going to work this year. In mid-February I start my residency at Toi Pōneke, and that is when I get to work on something different. So before then, I need to deal with some admin, and tie up some loose ends.

I am considerately less enthusiastic about this than starting a new book, but I'll feel better when it's done.

What does 2026 hold for me writing-wise? From here, it's all feet frantically paddling under the surface, but I'm for you, who get to watch the majestic glide of the duck (ha!) I am committed to releasing the next installments of Riverbank Yarns and Charley Deacon (I know I've stalled a bit on that last one, but progress is progressing). I'm working on something else for Riverbank Yarns as well, but I have to keep that a secret just now. I have finally got my short stories organised as well, so hopefully some of those will be finding a home in the coming months.

The residency will give me a chance to write most of my planned YA novel (I'm really excited to write this thing - my characters are coming to life but I'm forcing myself to not actually begin the drafting until I'm in my office). I have another new project to begin work on when that's finished.

I will be at Ages of Pages in Kirikiriroa Hamilton on 2 May. It's my favourite book fair and I'm really looking forward to seeing some of you there. Stay tuned for other events. And I'm sure there'll be some surprises too! I look forward to sharing some of the above, and more, as it happens.

I hope your year has started well, and that you have an excellent, book-filled year ahead!
